LO3: Proposal Planning a radio extract
For this project we are going to create an audio product for a local Wildlife Park, which was launched on the 23rd of May. This will inform people on the latest events and to advertise various aspects and main events that are going to come up, throughout the show, whilst entertaining an audience. The genre of backing music playing will be classic pop, family friendly and upbeat, which is well known to my target audience. From producing this radio show it will enhance the success and provide the audience with more knowledge of the events meaning they will be more successful for it has been broadcasted locally and is being promoted. Also, I am hoping to make the radio show more entertaining than already existing shows that talk about related topics. By doing this more people are more likely to listen to it, which will then grow the audience, making the Wildlife Park more known over the U.K.
My target audience will be mainstreamers and explorers, aimed towards families, which will be listened when taking the children to school etc, which will be aimed forwards ages 16+. The psychographics of my radio show would be mainstreamers and explorers as these categories are aimed at families and animal lovers, who want to be involved in local events around Doncaster. The radio show is aimed towards a local community as it will inform people about things such as events, future events and offers. This means that I will be competing with other local radio stations such as BBC and Hallam FM. I will have to compete against a high number of other radio stations, which advertise similar content on different radio stations, in the U.K.
To make the radio show entertaining and interesting to listen to the show will follow genre conventions of a local radio show. Steve Neale (1995) suggests that genres are instances of repetition and difference. I am reinforcing genre conventions with the production techniques. For example, the jingles we will use will ... carry and connote and have relatable jokes and stories played throughout to give the show a funny tone. The presenters in the show are going to use mode of address as ‘peer to peer,’ this will make the show come across friendly and have an informal mode to it, whilst getting the point across. This is important to make the show successful as it will engage with the target audience, of families, and make sure it is relatable to them. To make the show relatable to the target audience I will make sure the presenters of the show are of a mature age which will represent who my target audience is aimed at, whilst making the production relatable and entertaining to listen to.
The presenters which will be following the script, which we have created, will not be following the script word for word, meaning they can add their own wording to make the show less formal and more entertaining for its audience. The colour scheme of the shows house styles will have the same design to the Wildlife Park. This will connote to the target audience that the show is aimed towards families.
This product will be easily accessible through the podcast app on all Apple products and the same will go for android products, however the podcast app will need to be downloaded from the play store. For this radio station we will create our own jingle (10-15 seconds) which will play at the start, middle and end of the episode. As well as, using some non-copyright jingles to add in throughout the podcast (https://producer.musicradiocreative.com/free-sound-effects/) with a small part of a jingle will be played (about 3 seconds) in-between different subjects. Some of the jingles which we have inspiration off is the Capital and Hallam FM jingles, for they are also family friendly. We chose these jingles as they are a simple sound, and they also are recognisable to an audience as well as being catchy and you would be able to know what station that is playing just from the jingle and the genre of the station. We will also create 2/3 adverts to add into the show to promote some local businesses and some shops inside the park, such as Burros Moto Company and Chesterfield Poultry, to give the product a more professional feel to it. Other sound effects that will be used in the show are going to be related to what is being said in the show, for example, when the script talks about something like animals, a sound that is related to animals will be played in the background. However, we will not have background sound throughout all the show as it will take the audience's attention away from what is being said in the show, but some will be featured around topics. The location which we will be recording in will be a local soundproof studio, this will mean that the sound quality will be professional and clear to hear, this will therefore be easier to listen to as well as giving it a professional feel to the audience. Stuart Hall (1995) suggests that through ideology (belief system/values) or by stereotyping - tires to fix the meaning of representation in a preferred meaning. This relates to the show as the presenters may come across biased and have different viewpoints about a certain topic which is being spoken about in the show.
The job roles we will need to create this radio station will be sound editor, presenter, director, promotions manager, script writer, production team, copywriter, music director, producer.
Equipment which we will use to create a radio station: transmitter, microphone, headset, computer, editing software (Adobe Premiere), speaker, receiver, antenna, audio playback, audio playback component. The audio product will be edited on adobe audition or adobe premiere.
The distribution and marketing methods which we will use is through above the line methods. We will advertise this on things such as bus wrapping, leaflets, billboards, and different adverts e.g., radio or tv adverts. By distributing media on methods such as on bus wrapping and billboards, it means that it will be advertised in busy towns and cities as well as being shown majority of the day and is unavoidable and will always be visible to any audience. With using a leaflet this is pleasing to the eye of the audience and easy to understand as well as being cost effective and can be easily changed if needed. We chose to distribute the radio show through adverts on the TV and radio as it will reach a wider audience and grab more people's attention as it is also unavoidable in most cases. Some more places where we could distribute the product will be the car DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting), social media and by using an app just for the show. By using social media this would be a below the line method, as it is more personal and not everyone will view this unless they go looking across pages to find it. The social media pages which we can promote across will be pages already set up which will include behind the scenes content about the production of the radio show. The social media’s which we will use include Instagram, Facebook, Twitter. Also, the presenters of the product are also allowed to promote and tag the social media pages across their personal social media platforms, which overall will give a mass audience. Furthermore, we could also broadcast the radio station on YouTube, this allows the audience to easily access the product as well as saving the video, sharing it with friends as well as liking and subscribing to the YouTube channel which the show will be broadcasted on. To promote the radio station, we are going to use cooperation. This means that we will be using cross media advertising to make the show more recognisable to the primary audience. To do this we will make sure when the audio is playing there will be a poster of the logo on screen whilst the audience is listening to it. We got this idea from the capital breakfast show, they do this to make their audience aware of what capital as a brand look like and to show their audience the unique way they try to promote themselves.
The content that will be contained in the radio show will include jingles, different topic combinations, adverts, animal noises, future events information and information on the events that will be occurring. There will be a mixture of all this content to form a 5–10-minute radio show, the content that is being contained will show the audience the genre of the radio show and will serve the purpose of informing and educating the audience. Some examples of the further events that will occur will be the Halloween event in October, this will be like the 2021 Fantastic Halloween event. These events contain of live shows, entertainment and activities, carnival games and creepy characters. For people that would be interested in going to these events they can buy a further park entry ticket, this will further be followed by a short interview with a staff member at the park that has been involved with the past Halloween events, this will help us get intel on the events so we can reach the purpose of the radio show. Throughout the radio show there will be background sounds of animal noises and sounds of families having fun and the sound of crowds and carnival games. There will be a discussion of the age range for the events and the possible offers involved with the events. The advertisements that we would be including in this radio show would be an advert discussing the different shops and facilities contained in the park, this would create more profit for the park and would help promote the park because ti will provide information on the park and its facilities. Another idea for an advert could be promoting the parks offers for families or monthly passes that they may have or any for of promotional code that could be used.
At the start of each radio show it will start with a brief introduction introducing the presenters and a short part saying what upcoming topic will be discussed in the show. Followed by the jingle and then the advert about further events in the upcoming year and the local business which is around Doncaster and can relate to the same target audience. The show will then move to one of the main topics (Halloween) followed by another jingle and advert. Then there will be an interview with staff from the wildlife park, with a quiz answering questions, completed with animal noises. It will the end with upcoming events, with the outro then finished with a jingle.
Method of gathering potential funding for this media products development could be through the Yorkshire wildlife park, Crowdfunding or through kickstart. These methods would be an effective method for us to gather a form if funding for the product, this shows how we have ideas and suggestions of paces where we can gather a source of funding to push for the development and the progress of the radio show.
There will be two main presenters for this radio show would be Kaley Clark and Emily Bairstow, these will be the main presenter for the radio show for they can target the audience effectively and are the producers of the radio show. The presenters chosen have been chosen for they have done a radio show before and have managed to create an effective and high quality radio show that met its purpose in and effective manner.
The codes and conventions that would need to be followed to make sure that there has a jingle, presenters, formatted structure, main topic, not biased and is a friendly conversation. We will ensure to add these pieces of content and these specific assets so that the radio show stays professional and has the basic and needed codes and conventions.
